Gear pumps

Precise positive displacement pumps for highly viscous media, melts, oils and polymers — low pulsation, accurate and pressure-stable.

Gear pumps deliver volumetrically: two meshing gears trap the medium in the tooth gaps and move it from suction to discharge almost without pulsation. Flow stays constant even with varying back pressure — the prerequisite for exact metering.

Melt pumps

Melt pumps are developed specifically for conveying highly viscous plastic melts. They are mainly used in extrusion lines to ensure a constant mass flow and stable pressure build-up.

Gear pumps: constant flow for viscous media

Gear pumps deliver a geometrically defined volume per revolution through the tooth gaps. This yields their key property: flow is almost independent of back pressure and precisely controllable via speed. For metering, coating and extrusion tasks this is the decisive advantage over centrifugal pumps; the pumps overview classifies all designs.

External or internal gearing?

External gear pumps are compact, pressure-resistant and inexpensive – ideal for hydraulic oils and lubricants. Internal gear pumps run more quietly, tolerate higher viscosities and are superior at low speeds, for example with molasses, resins or bitumen.

  • No dry running – the medium is also the lubricant
  • Avoid solids: even fine sand destroys the running clearance
  • For hot media use heated jackets and adapted clearances
  • Provide a relief valve – displacement pumps build unlimited pressure

Frequently asked questions

Up to which viscosity do gear pumps work?
Depending on design and speed, gear pumps handle media from a few mPa·s up to several million mPa·s, such as polymer melts in extrusion. Highly viscous media require reduced speed and generous suction cross-sections.
Are gear pumps approved for food applications?
Yes, in hygienic stainless steel 1.4404 design with FDA-compliant seal materials, CIP-capable clearances and a low-dead-space construction.
Why low-pulsation delivery?
Gear pumps deliver volumetrically with virtually no pulsation – ideal for metering, coating and extrusion processes where a constant flow determines product quality.
