Pumps

Impeller pumps

Self-priming, gentle positive displacement pumps for liquids containing solids — compact, reversible and easy to service.

The flexible impeller deforms as it rotates in the eccentric housing and gently pushes the medium forward. Impeller pumps prime dry, deliver in both directions and handle liquids with entrained gas or soft solids without damaging them.

As a Jabsco distributor we supply impeller pumps in bronze, stainless steel and plastic with impellers in nitrile, EPDM, neoprene or Viton — matched to the medium.

Stainless steel impeller pumps

Hygienic pumping technology for food, pharma and industry

Stainless steel impeller pumps are self-priming positive displacement pumps for the gentle transfer of a wide range of liquids. Their hygienic design, high reliability and easy cleaning make them particularly suitable for the food, beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries as well as for numerous industrial processes.

The pump housings are made of high-grade stainless steel 1.4401 (AISI 316) and offer excellent corrosion resistance to many media and cleaning agents. Thanks to flexible impeller technology, sensitive products are handled particularly gently and almost free of pulsation.

Hygienic designs

Special designs are available for applications with the highest hygiene requirements. Especially in dairies, breweries and beverage production, stainless steel impeller pumps ensure safe and product-friendly transfer.

  • Food-grade materials
  • FDA-compliant product-contact materials
  • 3A-compliant designs available
  • Polished surfaces
  • Low dead-space construction
  • CIP cleaning (cleaning in place)
  • Quick disassembly for maintenance and cleaning

Available impeller materials

Depending on the medium and temperature, various impeller materials are available:

Neoprene

  • For water, beverages and lightly oily media
  • Good mechanical properties
  • High wear resistance

Nitrile (NBR)

  • High resistance to hydrocarbons
  • Frequently used in food applications

EPDM

  • Resistant to hot water and many cleaning media
  • Ideal for CIP processes
  • Good chemical resistance

Viton® (FKM)

  • For aggressive chemicals
  • High temperature resistance
  • Very good ageing resistance

Neoprene-L

  • Specially for food applications
  • Good resistance with sensitive products

Impeller pumps: gentle, self-priming, reversible

The flexible impeller in neoprene, NBR or EPDM deforms as it rotates and pushes the medium along gently. This makes impeller pumps suitable for shear-sensitive products such as wine, must, fish products or cosmetic emulsions – areas where a centrifugal pump would damage the product.

  • Self-priming up to around 4–5 m suction lift, even with entrained air
  • Reversible: changing direction empties the line
  • Dry running only briefly – without medium the impeller burns out in seconds
  • Budget and stock the impeller as a wear part – ranges from Flojet and Jabsco are available from stock

Frequently asked questions

Can an impeller pump run dry?
Only very briefly. The rubber impeller is lubricated by the medium; prolonged dry running destroys the vanes. Dry-run protection and a filled suction line at start-up are recommended.
Which impeller material for which medium?
Nitrile (NBR) for oils and fuels, neoprene for water and seawater, EPDM for chemicals and hot water, Viton for aggressive media and high temperatures.
Are impeller pumps self-priming?
Yes, impeller pumps self-prime up to roughly 4–5 m, which makes them ideal for transferring and emptying drums, tanks and containers.
